Day 17: spit

488 miles today. Denali to Homer

That was a long day man! I got up early so I could do some extra miles and skip a night in Anchorage.

The day started off looking like it would be boring for pictures. It was smoky up by Denali and the closer I got to Anchorage the more it started looking stormy and grey. I was really hoping to get a glimpse of Denali/Mt McKinley again from the south viewing spot along the highway but all the smoke and clouds made that impossible. O well. I got some pictures of it the last time I was here. While I was stopped at the south viewing area I saw this sign that talked about the history of the name of the mountain and I learned that the native name for Mt McKinley is actually Denali. I did not know that before. Check this out

I’m going to go with the original name of the mountain given by the native people. Denali. Anyway heres some pictures from the day.

The ride was rather uneventful until I got past Anchorage. Then the sun came out and gave me some great views as I went down to Homer.

I love this. These signs were everywhere. And there were people everywhere. its like the signs didnt exist.

I went all the way down to the end of the Homer spit and took my picture. I don’t know why it’s called that…..I’m sure there’s some nautical definition for a spit. I sat down on the beach for a minute and just thought and looked. I realized that this is the turn around point of the trip. I’ve accomplished all the things I planned, I went all the way to the top of Alaska and now I’m down at the bottom. It’s technically all going home from here. There’s still a long way to go though.

Here’s the video
